CHOOSE BY FEELING, NOT BY CHECKLIST

What kind of day
do you want?

Stay close to the bay, follow the coast east, walk through centuries of Cretan history or trade sea level for cooler mountain air. Start with one of our ready-made days, or filter every recommendation below.

FIVE EASY ITINERARIES

A day, already shaped.

2–4 HOURS · SLOW & CLOSE

A barefoot morning

Begin at Pilos, also known as Istron Bay Beach, or choose Voulisma before the middle of the day. Follow with a relaxed lunch around Kalo Chorio and return to the villa while the afternoon is still yours.

PILOS / ISTRON BAY → VOULISMA → KALO CHORIO

5–7 HOURS · VILLAGE & CULTURE

Frescoes, lanes and the lake

See the remarkable Byzantine frescoes at Panagia Kera, then take your time in Kritsa's narrow lanes. End around Lake Voulismeni and the harbour of Agios Nikolaos as the evening light settles in.

PANAGIA KERA → KRITSA → AGIOS NIKOLAOS

5–7 HOURS · HISTORY & SEA

The Minoan coast east

Walk the streets of the compact Minoan settlement of Gournia, pause beside the water at Pachia Ammos and continue to Mochlos for a long seafood lunch opposite its archaeological islet.

GOURNIA → PACHIA AMMOS → MOCHLOS

7–9 HOURS · MIRABELLO BAY

Across the water

Follow the coast to Elounda, cross to Spinalonga when boats and the site are operating, then slow down in Plaka. It is a full day, but the changing views across Mirabello Bay make the road part of it.

ELOUNDA → SPINALONGA → PLAKA

6–8 HOURS · WALK & WATER

A greener side of Crete

Walk through the shaded landscape of Richtis Gorge with proper shoes and water. Leave enough daylight for the return and, if your legs agree, finish with a swim or dinner on the Mochlos coast.

RICHTIS GORGE → MOCHLOS COAST

AROUND 5 MIN

Pilos / Istron Bay Beach

A sheltered sandy bay beneath steep green slopes, with typically calm blue water. The easiest choice when you want the sea without turning the day into an excursion.

BEST FOR A first swim, an uncomplicated beach day

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 5–10 MIN

Voulisma Beach

The best-known beach around Kalo Chorio: pale sand, clear blue-green water and organised facilities. Arrive early or later in the afternoon if you prefer a calmer atmosphere.

BEST FOR Sand, swimming, water sports

An organised sandy beach edged by reeds, eucalyptus and tamarisk. It offers a useful alternative when wind or the mood of the day makes you want something different from Voulisma.

BEST FOR Families, shade, windsurfing conditions

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 10 MIN

Karavostasi

A greener, more laid-back beach near the entrance to Kalo Chorio, surrounded by tamarisk, carob and olive trees. A good counterpoint to the area's more photographed bays.

BEST FOR Natural shade, a quieter swim

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 15–20 MIN

Agios Nikolaos

Walk around Lake Voulismeni, continue to the marina and stay for dinner by the water. It works equally well as a gentle afternoon outing or as the final stop after Kritsa.

BEST FOR Harbour walks, shops, an evening out

Villages & history

AROUND 10–15 MIN

Gournia

One of the clearest places to understand the scale of an everyday Minoan town. Its streets, houses, workshops and small palace sit together on a low hill close to the sea.

PAIR WITH Pachia Ammos or Mochlos

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 15–20 MIN

Pachia Ammos

A coastal village facing the Gulf of Mirabello. The harbour end of the beach is the more sheltered choice; it is also a natural pause between Gournia and the road farther east.

BEST FOR A short stop, lunch beside the route

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 20–25 MIN

Panagia Kera

A small three-aisled Byzantine church near Kritsa with unusually rich 13th- and 14th-century frescoes. Its modest exterior makes the painted interior feel even more striking.

PAIR WITH Kritsa and Ancient Lato

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 25 MIN

Kritsa

A hillside village of narrow lanes, traditional weaving and local products. Move beyond the main shopping street and allow time for the quieter residential lanes above it.

BEST FOR Village life, craft, a slow lunch

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 30 MIN

Ancient Lato

The remains of a Dorian city occupy a dramatic position between two hills. Come for the stonework and history; remember the wide view towards Mirabello Bay just as clearly.

PAIR WITH Panagia Kera and Kritsa

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 35–45 MIN

Mochlos

A small fishing village opposite a Minoan archaeological islet. Come for clear water and a long meal close to the sea, rather than for a list of conventional attractions.

BEST FOR Seafood, swimming, unhurried afternoons

Walks & landscapes

AROUND 30 MIN

Kritsa Gorge

A rocky gorge close to Kritsa for travellers who want a more active half-day. Conditions and route choices matter, so use proper footwear and ask locally before setting out.

BEST FOR A shorter active outing

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 50–60 MIN

Katharo Plateau

A high plateau above Kritsa at roughly 1,100 metres. The road climbs into a cooler agricultural landscape of orchards, fields and mountain peaks that feels far removed from the coast.

GO FOR The drive, cooler air, mountain tavernas

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 55–65 MIN

Richtis Gorge

A shaded gorge walk near Exo Mouliana leading through dense vegetation towards a waterfall. Allow several hours, carry water and avoid beginning late when daylight disappears between the trees.

BRING Hiking shoes, water, sun protection

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 35–45 MIN

Ha Gorge viewpoint

The narrow opening of Ha Gorge is a powerful geological sight from outside. Entering or crossing the gorge is technical canyoning — never a casual hike — and requires specialist guides.

Knossos & Heraklion Museum

If Minoan Crete matters to you, pair the palace complex of Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Book ahead when possible and treat this as one substantial day rather than an extra stop.

BEST FOR The island's essential archaeology

OPEN IN MAPS

AROUND 70–100 MIN

Sitia, Toplou & Vai

A long eastern route that combines Sitia's waterfront, historic Toplou Monastery and the palm-fringed landscape at Vai. Choose two or three stops according to season and how much road you enjoy.

GOOD TO KNOW

Leave room
for the day itself.

Let the wind choose the beach.

Conditions can differ from one bay to the next. When the sea is part of your plan, ask locally which nearby beach is best that morning.

Check before longer drives.

Archaeological opening hours, boat departures and seasonal access change. Verify them on the day instead of building a tight itinerary.

Start walks early.

Take water, sun protection and proper shoes. Gorge routes can lose daylight quickly, while mountain weather differs from the coast.

Do less, but stay longer.

East Crete rewards long lunches, unplanned swims and the road between places. Two thoughtful stops usually make a better day than five.
